So, last night was the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards, and a lot of the artistes came through with great performances. The likes of Cassper Nyovest, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, Patoranking, Davido, Donald all gave excellent performances. I was blown away by the performance of the South African ‘Kwaito’ group ‘’Boom Shaka’’, consisting of Junior Sokhela, Theo Nhlengethwa, the late Lebo Mathosa, and Thembi Seete. They were honored with the ‘Special Recognition Award’ for their contribution towards the development of South African and African music. To be honest, I had never heard of them till last night, but when I watched the video of interviews that other South African musicians gave about this group, I knew then that they deserved every bit of the recognition. I mean, these people changed the face of music in South Africa, and probably the whole of Africa with their outrageously creative songs and energy packed performances.
From the intro,
which was nice and different, to the first performance and on to the very last
by Emmy Gee, the whole show was great. I mean there were glitches here and
there, with artists almost forgetting their lines (Olamide when performing
‘’turn up’’ almost missed a line) to the mikes getting low sometimes and high
at other times. But you can’t expect EVERYTHING to go perfectly.
My best
performances of the night include; Bucie’s (of RSA) rendition of Boom Shaka’s
song ‘I love music’. Her voice was pure gold; clean, undulated, soft and so
very beautiful just like her fine self. Also, Donald’s performance of his hit
song ‘crazy but amazing’ gave me goose bumps, Lil Kesh also gave me something
to dance to with his remix of ‘shoki’ feat Davido and Olamide. I couldn’t get
enough of Patoranking and Tiwa Savage’s performance of ‘Girlie O’ though I
wasn’t here for her outfit. Of course, the man of the evening, Cassper Nyovest
performed, after walking away with ‘The Most Gifted Video Award’. ‘Doc Shebeleza’
won three awards out of all the categories it was nominated in.
It saddened me
though, that Ghana was not represented; apart from the artistes who were
nominated, there was no one there to even perform, which was strange, as
compared to the number of Nigerians and South Africans who performed. But what
SHOCKED me the most was the fact that Davido DIDN’T PICK ANY AWARD, AT ALL.
WHAT?! I was beyond surprised, because he owned 2014, literally. He had sold
out concerts, mega hits and all, and you tell me he wasn’t able to get A SINGLE
AWARD off of all this hard work? Hell no!
The highlight of my night, though was when AKA
(from RSA) picked an award for ‘Congratulate’. I was so psyched. I’m such a
fan(seriously fangirling here.lol), that when he won, I screamed for joy, which
made my mom rush out her room; thinking something was wrong, only to realize I
was watching an award how, she definitely wasn’t there for that BS and she let
me have it..Lol
The show ended
with a performance of the remix of another fav song of mine, for 2014, ‘Rands
and Naira’’ by Emme Gee feat Phyno, Cassper Nyovest, Dj Dimples and others.
Did you watch the award show?
What did you think of Davido not winning anything?
xo
